The Monadnock Essay Collection Prize


The 2016 Monadnock Essay Collection Prize contest is now CLOSED! Many thanks to everyone who submitted their collections and helped us publicize the contest. It was a great first year and we’re excited to see the winning essays!

Good luck to all our contestants. A winner will be announced in a couple months. Stay tuned for next year’s re-opening date as well!


We at Bauhan Publishing are pleased to announce the establishment of a new prize: The Monadnock Essay Collection Prize.

• The prize will be awarded for a book-length collection (120-160 pages or 50,000-60,000 words) of nonfiction essays

• The essays can take any form: personal essays, memoir in essay form, narrative nonfiction, commentary, travel, historical account etc.

• The essays must NOT have been previously published as a collection

The cost to enter this competition is $30.00 per manuscript (entrants may submit multiple manuscripts) and the winner will receive:

• $1,000 prize money

• Publication of their collection

• 100 copies of the published book

• Distribution with our other 2016 fall titles through our partner UPNE (University Press of New England)

We are thrilled to announce that our judge for the 2016 prize will be Alice B. Fogel the current New Hampshire Poet Laureate and award-winning author, poet, and teacher.

Alice B. Fogel has taught writing, poetry, and publishing at many colleges as well as workshops in the area. She has published numerous titles including her most recent: Interval: Poems Based on Bach’s Goldberg Variations which won the Nicholas Schaffner Award for Music in Literature is forthcoming from Schaffner Press. Her poetry collection Be That Empty published through Harbor Mountain Press was #8 on the 2008 National Poetry Society’s bestseller list. You can visit her website here.
