Since 1959 William L. Bauhan Publishing has had a special place in the literary landscape, using a commitment to craftsmanship as it focuses on New England regional books in the areas of history, art, nature studies, and poetry. Making its home in New Hampshire’s beautiful Monadnock Region, Bauhan Publishing has worked with a number of prominent writers, including poet May Sarton, humorist Newton F. Tolman, Harvard professor John Coolidge, and Time Magazine correspondent, James Wilde.

Despite the passing of William L. Bauhan in March 2006, the family is committed to keeping his legacy going and has appointed Ian Aldrich, a former editorial consultant with the company and a veteran magazine editor, as director. Under Ian’s watch, the company is continuing its dedication to producing books that speak to the New England way of life.

It was a tone that was set by William Bauhan in 1959, when he purchased the company. Eager to make a career in publishing without having to sacrifice his dreams of living in the New England countryside, Bauhan, a thirty-year-old newspaperman with a history degree from Princeton University put down a $5,000 investment and bought the Richard R. Smith firm, a small publishing house in Rindge, New Hampshire. The company had moved from New York City in 1953.

Immediately relocating the publishing house to nearby Peterborough, New Hampshire, Bauhan narrowed the firm’s focus to non-fiction, New England related books. One of the biggest successes came early on, when, in 1967, Bauhan Publishing reprinted “The Real Diary of a Real Boy” by Henry A. Shute, with illustrations by acclaimed artist, Tasha Tudor.

In 1972, Bauhan again moved the company, this time to the noted artist colony of Dublin, New Hampshire, in the former home of artist Alexander James, the youngest son of philosopher of William James. For the next three decades Bauhan infused traditional Yankee values into his work and life, housing his company’s headquarters in the upstairs of a Civil War era post-and-beam barn.

Over the last few years, Bill’s daughter Sarah has managed the company, producing a range of titles including the recently published children’s book, Ant Hymn by musician Cosy Sheridan, as well as V-Mail: Letters to Luette, a collection of World War II letters edited by the author’s son, Hal Close.

Today, Bauhan Publishing, which is still based in the Monadnock Region, is one of New England’s premier small independent publishing houses.
