John Brighton grew up in small-town New Hampshire, one of four children of an attorney and district court judge and an aspiring sculptor. When Brighton was six, his parents purchased an old hill farm at the edge of a lake in Washington, New Hampshire, population 160. In The Forgotten County, he tells of growing up in a quiet village during the turbulent 1960s and 1970s, saying fondly, “Those times and the people I came to know there shaped my life in ways I didn’t comprehend for many years.”

This memoir, imbued with humor, nostalgia, and a love of history, describes a young man’s search for himself, from childhood and through high school hijinks, enduring friendships, first love, and travels across country in a VW camper. After trying his hand at different jobs, including building docks on Cape Cod, Brighton eventually found his direction, and the love of his life, and was ultimately drawn back to where he started—small-town New Hampshire. He lives with his wife Susan in Hanover.
